Today marks the official breaking of ground on Victoria's first protected bike lane.
The city has contracted Brunnell Construction to build a two-way bike lane that, upon completion, will span more than a kilometer of Pandora Avenue, from the new Johnson Street Bridge to Cook Street. The project will cost an estimated $3.4-million dollars, nearly $900-thousand of which will be covered through a BikeBC grant.
"It's part of the city's plan to construct cycling facilities and a cycling network that's really high quality in all ages and abilities."
Edward Pullman, president of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition, says completion is expected by next Spring.
"When the new Johnson Street Bridge is complete, you'll have the ability to take the new multi-use trail that will be constructed across the bridge very easily and then easily get yourself on to this new Pandora protected bike lane and take yourself well into downtown Victoria."
To improve the road surface before the two-way bike lane is established, repaving will take place on Pandora next week from Government to Douglas Street.
