A community movement calling for an historic name to be removed from a Victoria street is picking up steam this week.
Joseph Trutch was B.C.'s first lieutenant-governor but he's also remembered for trampling the rights of B.C.'s Indigenous peoples in the 19th century, which is why the University of Victoria recently erased his name from one of it's residence buildings.
Event organizer Dr. Reuben Rose-Redwood, Associate Geography Professor at U-Vic, says the City of Victoria should follow suit and rename Trutch street:
"You always encounter critics in any kind of renaming proposal. One of the arguments is that it erases history. The problem with that argument is it conflates the need to understand the past with the honorific celebration and glorification of certain historical figures whose legacies may be problematic.'
Dr. Rose-Redwood says everyone is welcome to the community discussion Tuesday January 16th at 7 pm at the Cook Street Village Activity Centre.
