City council is being asked to authorize demolition of the old Plaza Hotel, destroyed in a fire 5 weeks ago.
The old hotel, historically known as the Hotel Westholme, is designated as a heritage building.
Staff are recommending the clean up be carried out quickly for safety reasons, and on condition that historical elements that survived the blaze be salvaged.
Those include a pair of round polished granite columns that flanked the original entry to the Hotel Westholme, as well as white glazed brick, heavy structural timbers that suffered only minor fire damage, cast iron structural columns, and sidewalk prisms.
The intention is to integrate the elements into a future proposed development for the site. The owners intend to present initial concepts of a new design this fall.
