A child was airlifted to hospital Friday afternoon after being mauled by one, possible two cougars near Cowichan Lake
Land and air ambulance units were dispatched to the scene near Point Ideal Drive at about 3:30 p.m.
RCMP say the child's injuries are serious in nature and are asking people to stay indoors especially if they see police or conservation officers in the area.
Age of the child is not known.
The B.C. Ministry of Environment says conservation officers will be conducting a full investigation of the site and attempting to locate and capture any cougar or cougars.
