The Mayor of Central Saanich will argue for a further cull of Canada geese when he attends Wednesaday's Capital Regional District meeting. Mayor Ryan Windsor says the geese are presenting a huge problem to farmers in his municipality and others, and numbers need to be reduced.
"I know that for some it's a bit offputting that we are, you know, removing geese from the poplulation. But you have to remember these are non-migratory geese. These were introduced here in the 70's. For various reasons their numbers have exploded."
The CRD tried a cull last year. They had a permit to cull 250 birds, but only managed to trap and kill about 45.
Windsor says the geese now number somewhere in the neighbourhood of 9,000 -- and are having a terrible impact on food security in the region.
Windsor was speaking with CFAX 1070's Pamela McCall.
