Tense times in downtown Victoria on Tuesday.
Victoria Police were on high alert following a bomb threat Tuesday afternoon and a suspicious package discovered Tuesday night.
Police say a man called in a bomb threat to the Victoria Courthouse on Burdett around 4 o'clock, saying the bomb would go off within 20 minutes.
The building was evacuated and police and K-9 units conducted a full sweep.
The roads and sidewalks around the Courthouse were closed until the all-clear was given.
Acting Staff Sergeant Mike Darling, says the sheriffs did a great job. "They acted promptly in evacuating and locking down the courthouse. They also evacuated eight people currently in custody at the courthouse, transporting them to Victoria Police cells."
Darling says this type of incident causes significant disruption, especially when a building with tight security is involved. He says sweeping secure areas such as the court registry, the judges chambers, and the sheriff's' cells takes time.
Then around 10 Tuesday night, a security guard discovered a suspicious package in Centennial Square.
A Bomb Tech and K-9 units were called to sweep the Square. Victoria Police also closed Pandora Street from Douglas to Government.
The package was deemed harmless. The all clear was given in Centennial Square just after 2 am.
VicPd's Matt Rutherford says having CCTV cameras in the area may prove helpful to the investigation.
If you have any information on either of the incidents, call VicPD or Crimestoppers.
