North District RCMP say a logging truck driver who died after his rig went off a logging road at Caycuse, west of Lake Cowichan, likely was the victim of a road washout.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson says heavy rains are believed to have compromised the structure of the roadway which collapsed when the logging truck came along about 4:30 am Wednesday.
Saunderson says the truck fell into water on the driver's side trapping the driver. Another truck driver came along shortly afterwards, found the accident scene, and notified emergency personnel.
"Due to the location of the crash, and the condition of which the vehicle was in being in water, heavy equipment had to be called in to remove the vehicle. And it was at that time, with the assistance of the underwater recovery team, that the driver of the vehicle was found in the vehicle, and sadly was deceased."
While the man has been identified and next of kin notified, his name has not been released. He was 60 years old.
Saunderson says engineers will check the condition of the road and ensure it is safe to drive on.
