The group that's been opposing bike lanes on Cook Steet is breathing a collective sigh of relief that city staff are sending a reporty to council outlining why Vancouver Street is a better choice.
The spokesperson forĀ the " says he's happy Cook Street may be spared -- but Robert McConnell is concerned about a plan to allow parking on both sides of Vancouver Street.
He says staff propose allowing parking during the day on both sides of the street in order to narrow the travel portion, forcing traffic to slow. But McConnell says that isn't the safest idea:
"It would be far better for them to bite the bullet, create cycle pathways either side of the street, there's lots of room on the boulevard without major encroachments. And provide better security for cyclists using that street, and increase the number of cyclists using that street. So it's a funny mishmash this report".
McConnell says it also makes no sense to press ahead with the extension of the Humboldt corridor to Cook Street reasoning that funneling cyclists of differing abilities to an area that's a "mixing zone" for traffic is dangerous.
