Victoria hopes to make a successful bid to bring 5,000 Indigeous ahtletes to the region for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games.
Other Canadian cities including Ottawa, Halifax and Winnipeg have also bid for the games.
The Songhees Nation is partnering with the region to bid on the games. Chief Ron Sam says if the Indigenous Games in Toronto are any indication the games here will be a significant economic generator for the entire region.
"Well, the numbers are just coming out for Toronto, where we hope to bring a lot more people to Victoria, and Toronto's numbers that were just released--were a $44 million economic impact for the region last year."
The games are hosted every three years and feature athletes competing in a number of sports including archery, badminton, basketball, lacrosse and soccer.
