The BC SPCA has launched a new program to accredit six dog-training businesses in British Columbia -- three are located on Vancouver Island.
The AnimalKind program incorporates science-based training standards, to ensure humane treatment for dogs, and peace of mind for their owners.
Local companies receiving AnimalKind accreditation are: Ethical Canine Training & Behaviour Modification in Victoria, Cowichan Canine Behaviour & Training in Duncan, and Positive Dog in Nanaimo.
The remaining three are based in Vancouver and Surrey.
The new standards were developed after a thorough review of scientific research, feedback from international animal behaviour and dog training experts, and in-person consultations with 36 dog trainers across the province.
Dr. Sara Dubois, chief scientific officer for the BC SPCA, say they have fielded hundreds of calls from dog owners looking for guidance on how to find a good trainer, now they have a way to assess training and make a referral.
