The Victoria Branch of the BC SPCA has put out call for donations to help provide urgently-needed surgery for a very large canine in its care.
Caesar is a 2-year-old Great Dane who came into the shelter through an animal cruelty investigation.
Manager for the Victoria SPCA, Annie Prittie-Bell says the dog had been living in filthy conditions and was underweight in addition to a very serious issue with his knee.
"They figure that this (knee issue) happened a long time ago when he was a puppy, so he is used to living this way. Not super painful right now, but the reason we are needing to do surgery is to make sure that it doesn't become super painful or acutely painful, or he doesn't lose the ability to use the leg."
Prittie-Bell says in addition to the cost of the surgery and because of his size, Caesar will require professional rehabilitation to help with his recovery.
The total cost for Ceasar's care, surgery and rehabilitation will be more than $9,000. Petsecure, a pet insurance company, is willing to match donations from the public.
