BC's Finance Minister says the Province will not support Victoria's 2022 Commonwealth Games bid.
In a release, Carole James thanked the bid committee for their effort, but said ultimately the provincial government cannot commit to support the bid through direct funding,or providing a financial shortfall guarantee.
James says after analyzing the bid committee's work too many details remain unknown in order to assess costs, obligations and risks associated with hosting such a large-scale event.
Black told CTV News "The dream is over. We cannot continue without the province’s support. I think we are missing a huge opportunity."
James says she expects B.C. communities will bid for future Games, such as the 100th anniversary in 2030 -- adding the Province will consider those proposals when there is more time to do the work necessary to protect B.C. taxpayers from financial uncertainty.
