VicPD, BC Transit, and the City of Victoria have launched an education and enforcement campaign aimed at getting drivers to use bus and bike priority lanes along Douglas Street appropriately.
From now until Friday (Nov 4) police will be patrolling, providing drivers with information -- but in a bit of a twist, instead of a traffic ticket drivers will get a bus ticket. However - starting Monday (Nov 7) police will begin handing out traffic citations to private vehicles using the lanes incorrectly. The fine for being in a bus/bike priority lane is $109.
Motorists are only allowed to enter bus and bike lanes if making a right hand turn within that block. Currently bus and bike priority lanes are in effect weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. southbound from Hillside to Fisgard and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. northbound from Fisgard to Tolmie.
However-- starting in the spring the lanes will be designated for transit and cyclist use only, 24 hours a day.
