Alberta is ramping up it's campaign against British Columbian over the Trans Mountain oil pipeline. Premier Rachel Notley has revealed a website and online petition to collect signatures from Albertans which will be fired off to B.C. Premier John Horgan.
It's the latest in Notley's offensive against her B.C. counterpart since Horgan announced British Columbia will limit oil imports until it can consult a scientific panel to determine if diluted bitumen can be effectively cleaned up if spilled into ocean waters.
Notley believes the move would stop expansion of the Kinder Morgan Canada pipeline, a project that would increase the amount of tarsands oil now being piped from Edmonton to terminals in Burnaby.
Notley's politicial future hinges on whether she can get the project and Alberta's resource-based economy going again.
Notley says Horgan is illegally ignoring Ottawa's jurisdiction in the matter. However B.C. has pointed to the Northern Gateway project as a similar project that was ruled by the courts as posing a disproportionate risk to British Columbia, therefore giving the province jurisdiction over protecting istself from environmental and economic catasrophe. That project had also been approved by Ottawa.
Since BC's announcement Alberta has retaliated by stopping the purchase of electricity from it's neighbouring province, and imposed a ban on B.C. wine.
