The 20th annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock gets under way tomorrow with a send off event at Admirals Walk shopping centre at 7:00am. Following that event riders will head to Port Alice to start the first leg of their 27-city island tour, taking them from one end of Vancouver Island to the other, covering 1,000 kilometres.
West Shore RCMP's Constable Cole Brewer is part of the team that will be attending community events along the way aimed at raising money for pediatric cancer research and support programs, like Camp Goodtimes, a special camp for children battling cancer.
"We all know people who've been affected by cancer and sometimes these kids bear scars, injuries, lose their hair. And even if they were capable of going to the same camp as a normal kid they may not feel comfortable taking off their shirt to go for a swim or something like that. And so Camp Goodtimes is just .. you know, one of my teammates Mike Gonzales described it as kind of like Disneyland in the woods. "
Brewer lost his father to cancer, and his mother is a cancer survivor.
