The city of Vancouver is working towards setting up a Chinese-Canadian museum with the possibility of smaller, satellite museums established across BC, including Victoria.
Victoria is home to the oldest Chinatown in Canada, and second oldest in North America.
Victoria City counsellor, Charlayne Thornton-Joe a third-generation Chinese-Canadian, is hoping for a museum here. She says the history of our Chinatown is a story to be told and remembered.
"When I look at my own family, my grandparents coming here, my father being born here but not being considered a Canadian citizen and not being able to vote. And, after World War II where he was in basic training to be able to fight for our country, but he wasn't even considered a citizen, gave me opportunities not only to be able to vote, but to sit on council."
Thornton-Joe has been collecting photographs and other historical memorabilia with a proposed Chinese-Canadian museum in mind.
