The Swan Lake Trestle is in desperate need of resurfacing. That has some suggesting it may be time to replace the well-used part of the Lochside trail, a link to the Galloping Goose.
Saanich councillor and CRD director Vic Derman uses the trestle himself -- and says it's completely substandard and deteriorating more.
Derman says the Parks committee has come back recommending a wood surface again as the trestle isn't strong enough to handle asphalt, and other decking is quite pricey.
But Derman says wood has a short lifespan - and the matter has been sent back to the Parks committee to come up with other solutions: :
" Do you need repairs to the framework? How much would that cost? What kinds of ptions were investigated for the surface? Maybe there are lighter weight materials other than asphalt, syntehtic materials, whatever."
Derman says Parks has been asked for a full report and numbers on what to do with this important part of a major commuting route. He expects the report back in the late spring.
