Victoria's newest protected bike lanes along Wharf Street will open for public use tomorrow.
A city news release confirms a phased opening will begin from the Johnson Street Bridge to Fort Street. That includes the pedestrian scramble crosswalk at the Victoria Visitor Centre.
The section from Fort to Government will opening next Thursday (Aug 8) , followed by Government to Douglas the Thursday week after that (Aug 15).
The new features along the Wharf/Humboldt corridor include: a two-way protected bike lane from Pandora Avenue to Douglas Street; a shared, traffic-calmed road from Douglas to Vancouver Streets; 8 new pedestrian crossings plus a new pedestrain scramble crosswalk; 2 urban plazas with trees, benches and play features.
There's also a new pedestrian-controlled traffic light at Yates Street, a new traffic signal at the Johnson Street Bridge, and new transit stops near the entrance to Reeson Park and on Government Street.
Everyone is being encouraged to use caution, obey new traffic signals, and to respect others by following the rules of the road.
The city will station Safety Ambassadors along Wharf Street, and at the new scramble crosswalk, throughout August to help answer questions.
The new stretch of bike lanes are part of a 32km cycling network that will connect Victoria neighbourhoods by the end of 2022.
