West Shore RCMP responded to an unusual call on Tena Place in Colwood Wednesday.
A large buck had its antler entangled in netting surrounding some shrubs and was trapped, and exhausted from trying to free itself.
Cst. Alex Bérubé says a dog handler was in the area and took the call - quickly becoming a deer handler:
"The deer was rather large, but the officer could see that it was struggling quite a bit so he decided to just go ahead and try and free him, which he did successfully without injuirng the deer."
Cst. Alex Bérubé says an agitated deer can cause itself serious injury - as well as anyone trying to help it. But in this case - the officer was able to free the buck:
"And it's not uncommon for us to be called upon for an injured deer and often times we have to put them down just because there's no possibility of them to be rehabilitated. Luckily this time it turned out to be a more positive outcome for the deer and for the officer who responded as well. It was just a good outcome."
Bérubé says while the deer was okay the bush took a beating, suffering some broken branches from the bucks' efforts to get free.
