Dozens of volunteers in Oak Bay took matters into their own hands this weekend to try and clean up the areas derelict boats.
Derelict boats have been a long-standing issue in the CRD but a group of volunteers has decided they've had enough of waiting for some level of government to clean the eyesores up. "It's a fire hazard, its a safety hazard and it's a blight on a beautiful part of Victoria," says volunteer Eric Dahli.
Derelict boats have lined the Oak bay side of the beach for years. Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen defends his municipality saying they don't have the budget. "It's not for us to come to the table. We're a small community we don't have the resources of a province we don't have the expertise of the province or for that matter of the federal government. So the big players will have to clean this up."
The CRD did chip in some money for tipping fees but promises of further assistance fell through at the last minute.
