Sidney Island has not yet had its water activated, meaning anyone heading to the island will have to bring their own.
According to Parks Canada, the activation was delayed due to damage to one of the docks.
“This year, we discovered winter storm damage to one of the pylons on Sidney Island’s main dock. We needed to ensure the pylon was repaired so the docks that visitors rely upon are in place this May, however, this resulted in delays to the water system activation,” Parks Canada said in an email to CFAX.
They hope to have water running by the end of June in time for their peak season.
Other Gulf Island National Park Reserve campgrounds have had their water systems activated, and are unaffected by this.
“While water service is up and running at our drive-in campsites, including McDonald Campground in North Saanich and Prior-Centennial on Pender Island, we have not yet activated the water system for Sidney Island,” Parks Canada said. “At this time, Sidney Island will operate like a back-country campsite and visitors will need to bring water with them.”
