A new study suggests that violence against teachers in Canada is growing, and being underreported.
BC Teacher Federation president, Glen Hansman, said people in education are the second most likely to experience violence in the workplace.
“Workers in K-12, not just teachers but the other adults as well, like education assitants, principals and vice principals,” Hansman said. “We report the second highest amount of all the sectors in British Columbia. So it’s health, then it’s education, then down the list are people who work as police or firefighters, it's a real problem.”
The study also suggests that violent incidents are often linked to a lack of critical resources and supports for students in schools.
This study was the first Pan-Canadian Research Review conducted on violence against teachers.
