Monday night snow and slush turned into Tuesday morning ice on Greater Victoria's roads.
RCMP reported several crashes on the Pat Bay Highway throughout the Tuesday morning commute. It was the area that saw the greatest number of motor vehicles incidents, but Sooke Rd. and the Malahat were troublesome at times.
Despite the icy roads, all local schools that contacted C-FAX reported that they were staying open this morning.
The winter weather triggered Victoria's Extreme Weather Protocol.
An additional 85 shelter beds opened at Our Place, the Salvation Army and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. That brought the total number of available shelter spaces to 395 last night.
Regional Coordinator Jen Wilde was out on the streets overnight and says they didn't fill all the shelter spaces. However, she says it can sometime take a couple of days of exposure before some people decide to leave the streets and seek help.
Temperatures will continue to drop below zero for the next couple of nights and snow is forecast for Wednesday night and Thursday.
