Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says her refusal to pledge allegiance to the Queen when she took office will have no impact on the Royal visit.
“That was not meant to offend. No other local government in the Capital Region swears an oath of allegiance to the Queen so it was nothing odd. It was picked up and turned into a big deal for no big reason.”
Helps says she is in no way anti-monarchy and she considers it an honour to be able to spend time with the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to showcase Victoria and British Columbia to the world.”
Helps is scheduled to meet with the Royal family in four events this weekend.
