New numbers from Statistics Canada shows Victoria had the second highest inflation rate in December among major cities.
At 3.2% Victoria was behind only Iqaluit, Nunavut -- which came in at 3.5%. Victoria had been at 2.5% in November. Vancouver was in 3rd place at 3.1%, up from 2.3% the previous month.
BC led the provinces at 3% -- up from 2.4% in November. Ontario was second highest at 2.3%.
Canada’s annual inflation rate recorded an unexpected acceleration, climbing to 2% last month.
The latest consumer price index reports Canadians paid just over 28% more for air transportation -- mostly due to higher travel prices during the holidays -- and nearly 15% more for fresh vegetables.
There was also a 7.5% boost in mortgage interest costs, 3.8% increase in restaurant bills, and 5.1% hike in passenger vehicle insurance premiums.
