A Victoria police officer who lied about why he did not attend a conference in Vancouver is facing disciplinary action.
The Victoria Police Department paid to send Const. Marty Steen to a 3-day safe-schools conference in February 2018, but information surfaced that he only attended 1 day.
Steen's promotion to Sergeant was delayed as punishment following an internal disciplinary process.
Speaking to CTV Vancouver Island, Deputy Police Complaint Commissioner Rollie Woods says his office was alerted to the situation after it became clear to superior officers Steen had lied about his absence.
"The Department, to their credit they brought it to our attention, they asked for an investigation, they conducted an investigation. And the outcome was the one that we see today, where Constable Steen was held to account. And now he's requested a review on the record, and the commissioner has granted it, so it's not over yet. We'll see what the retired judge decides."
Wood says when an officer misleads his superiors there is a concern, because integrity is everything for a police officer and it goes towards public trust.
