Many pedestrians and cyclists say they don't feel safe on the roads.
A Vancouver group says cyclists and pedestrians need to be recognized under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Victoria City Council is backing a push for the province to update the Act.
David Hay, Senior Litigation Lawyer leading the Road Safety Reform Group says with all the new bike lanes and other infrastructure cities are putting in, there is an urgent need for an overhaul.
"Municipalities are building designated bike lanes and segregated routes and painting boxes here and there and taking steps to protect cyclists, but the problem is the legislation hasn't kept pace."
BC's Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Claire Trevena says her ministry is currently reviewing suggestions for improving safety for all road users including changes or updates to the Motor Vehicle Act.
