Uvic Properties is teaming with a developer on plans to redevelop and create new buildings for rental, housing and commercial space in downtown Victoria.
The proposed project will see Chard Development create 52 units of rental housing at 1312 Broad Street and 53 condominiums with renovation of the historic Duck’s building and next door parking lot.
Chard also intends to buy the adjacent annex building at the corner of Broad and Johnson that will be used for another 53 residential condos.
“We have been committed to developing a broad range of housing alternatives in downtown Victoria for more than a decade,” says Dave Chard, president of Chard Development said in a release. “We are thrilled to be working with the University of Victoria and UVic Properties to help realize the potential of this historic site.”
UVic says the rental units are intended to help address the shortage of on campus housing, giving students' first crack at the housing.
The Broad Street properties were donated as part of the late Michael Williams donation to Uvic.
Uvic and Chard will have to go through the process of getting development permits from the City first.
