VicPd are confirming the death of one of their officers who has been in a coma for more than 30 years.
Constable Ian Jordan was 35 when he was involved in an on-duty crash resulting in injuries that left him in a coma, until his death last (Wednesday) night.
Jordan was responding to a potential break and enter in progress on Fort Street early in the morning of September 22, 1987. As officers converged on the scene Cst. Jordan's vehicle collided with another VicPD car at the intersection of Douglas and Fisgard.
VicPD is extending sincere condolences to Cst. Jordan's family, friends and colleagues. Cnst. Jordan's wife Hilary visited him daily, and on the 30th anniversary of the crash last year said he got frequent visits from officers of VicPD.
A funeral with full police honours is planned for Thursday, April 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Avenue.
The department notes the legacy of the tragedy is the establishment of a "trauma team," the forerunner of the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team -- which is now an essential component of how VicPD helps officers and staff after traumatic incidents of all kinds.
