A tree planting ceremony in honour of a late Sooke Councillor will be held on Tuesday, August 6.
Brenda Parkinson, who served 3 terms on Sooke Council, passed away in June after a brief battle with brain cancer.
Two red oaks will be planted at John Phillips Memorial Park, next to Sooke City Hall, and Mayor Maja Tait says the spot they picked has a strong meaning.
"We sort of chose the location that would be the main entrance to the park, and on either side of the trail, as sort of a way to welcome people into the park. Brenda was a very welcoming person, so it made sense to have two trees greeting people as they came in."
Taite adds that Parkinson wasn't a religious person, but always sought out a blessing, and Elder Shirley Elfonse will be doing a blessing, before the speakers, including Premier John Horgan and MP Randal Garrison, say they're peace and help plant the trees.
Tait says Parkinson was heavily involved in lots of community events and projects, including beautifying the community.
"All of our transit stops have artwork within them. All of our hydro boxes and sewer infrastructure pump stations all have paintings or they're wrapped with artwork. Always looking for local art. And even some way-finding trail signage that we're looking to install soon will have a call-to-artists to find First Nation artwork on the trail head were all her doing. She also took on some "Community In Bloom" initiative with some passion and brought us up to a 5 Bloom Status."
She says the late councillor was also very supportive of the fire department, and a fire engine named in her honour will be on hand at the ceremony.
Parkinson was also a marriage commissioner for 10 years, and Council will do some planning work and public hearings to discuss building a gazebo in John Phillips Memorial Park in her honour.
The memorial service is being held at 1 o'clock, and the public is invited to come and pay their respects to the late councillor.
