A 3-day road project to fill potholes on the Old Island Highway between Admirals Rd and the Colwood Interchange has raised the tempers of some drivers.
The Old Island Highway needs some TLC - and View Royal's Director of Engineering, John Rosenburg, says road crews will be getting it done over 3 days, between 9 am and 3 pm - avoiding the peak travel times for motorists on the popular commuter route.
"Although it's inconvenient, and it's certainly more costly to set up extra times where we could do the work in 2 days, it'll take 3 days just by making the smaller window of opportunity."
Rosenburg, says the work is necessary to off-set the need for a full paving job, which would be much more disruptive.
But despite the adjustments to the work schedule, and advance warning of the work to be done -- road crews and city hall staff have been at the receiving end of angry comments from the public. Rosenburg says it actually crosses the line into "abuse":
" And we expect it, and we let our staff know, and you know, they brace themselves for the onslaught. But in today's work everybody wants everything now. And they don't understand that
you know, this is part of getting them safely to work, maybe not today, but tomorrow, and in the years forward."
Rosenburg is urging more patience from members of the public - especially those behind the wheel, as rising tempers can lead to rising accident rates and that complicates things for all involved.
