More than 2,000 people carrying signs with slogans like, "love Trumps hate" overflowed Centennial Square and marched through downtown Victoria Saturday afternoon.
In a show of solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington -- cities and towns across the world saw scores come out for women's marches. Victoria councilor Marianne Alto was one of about 600 women who travelled to Washington. "It's been overwhelming. As we identify ourselves as Canadians people have thanked us for supporting them, which is a remarkable experience."
In Victoria, streets were overflowing with people -- organizers say the march was meant to promote women’s rights rather than oppose U.S. president Donald Trump, but many in attendance say they were motivated by controversial statements during the election campaign. Victoria MP Murray Rankin was at the Victoria rally. "I don't think I've seen crowds like this since I've been in Victoria. But where do we take it? That's what I'm looking forward to."
There were also marches in Nanaimo and Courtenay.
