Transport Canada will be aiding in the remediation of Reay Creek Pond in Sidney.
The remediation process, which will take place through the summer and fall, will include the removal of contaminated sediments from the pond that were first noticed in 2015.
75 years of industrial activities at the airport lead to high levels of metals in Reay Creek and the pond, including cadmium, zinc, chromium and lead.
Transport Canada has classified Reay Creek as a Class 1 contamination site, or "High Priority for Action," and will take the lead in the remediation process.
The Town of Sidney will also work on the project, by having town staff involved in the cleanup, hosting Town Hall meetings, and informing the public with updates throughout the remediation process.
