New school catchments boundaries is being proposed by the Greater Victoria School District.
The proposed plans will help offset growing enrolments, smaller class sizing, and capacity issues.
Mark Walsh, Secretary Treasurer of Greater Victoria School District, says they started looking at changes by asking the public "what do you value when looking at boundaries."
"We had over 5,000 responses across the district that said a couple things that I think that most people would agree with: we want access to our neighbourhood schools, we want to keep siblings together as much as possible, we want to go as cohorts from one school to the next."
He says they came up with some plans that address many of the issues, including turning Southpark Elementary and Cloverdale into catchments schools, and by doing so they will open enough space to support the elementary school growth in downtown Victoria. The School District is also proposing opening Victor School to create more space in Oaklands Elementary, and opening Richmond School as an extension to Lansdowne Middle School, to serve students going to Central Middle School.
Walsh says no school within a school will be asked to move because of the new boundaries, and they are trying to not create massive impacts to families with the new boundaries.
He says the next stage is to get the public's input. Their website has information on what the boundaries will look like, and dates for public consultations and open houses, which Walsh says parents should attend.
