A fatal head on crash yesterday (Sunday) at Hwy 1 and Leigh Rd closed the Trans Canada for more than 5 hours, and happened in the same area as a fatal head on collision last month.
The latest incident involved a BMW and a Acura.
According to West Shore RCMP the 24 year old driver of the Acura was killed. Two passengers in the vehicle were transported to hospital with significant injuries. Those in the BMW were not seriously hurt.
The cause is still under investigation.
Langford Mayor Stew Young says following last month's fatal in the same area -- which killed 1 driver -- his staff met with provincial transportation officials to discuss safety improvements.
" Well after the first one we talked to our staff and engaged the ministry of transportation and let them know our concerns. They had a meeting last week, and it was sort of agreed that they would put a median from the interchange around to the Westshore Parkway, a middle concrete barrier, and add a second lane."
But now Young is moving up one aspect of the work:
" Now since this accident I think it's more of an urgent thing now. I'm meeting with my staff right now, and we talked yesterday that I'd like to see the medians put in immediately. We don't need to do studies or anything else, we know it's unsafe. Put the median in immediately, and then basically do the major works with the second lane which will be done through the summer."
West Shore RCMP say while they don't know yet if weather was a contributing factor, they remind motorists to slow down and drive to conditions.
