Saanich council has voted down a staff recommendation to spend $80-thousand dollars on creating five more parking spots at Mount Douglas Park.
Councillor Susan Brice says staff were ordered to look into the matter in February after council heard complaints from residents about no parking signs being erected at the Glendenning Road access point to Mount Douglas.
Brice says council turned down the staff recommendation last night for two reasons.
"That's an enormous amount of money, $16-thousand dollars per spot. But also, philosophically, looking at Glendenning Road, which is just an amazing little road with trees. We just did not feel that adding parking or returning to parking there was going to be an improvement."
Staff found during the process that some other parking spaces at Mount Doug are being underutilized.
Brice says council has concluded they need to raise awareness about all the parking available, and to find ways to make those parking spots more desirable.
