Saanich police are monitoring a protest camp in Gyro Park, and have spoken to organizers about guidelines of expected behaviour.
Cnst. Andy Stuart wouldn't comment on the disturbing issues Oak Bay Police had to deal with, but says his municipality is not anticipating any problems.
Stuart told campers washrooms will be left open so there will be no "toilet activity" in the park during the evening. Oak Bay police says they had to respond twice to overdoses in the camp when it was in their area, and contaminated drug paraphernalia were found in the camp's vicinity.
Stuart did address that concern with organizer Chrissy Brett:
" And so that is very clear that she does not want anything to negatively impact their peaceful protest, and so, that has been discussed. And I believe that they have containers that they can use to dispose of needles."
Stuart says Parks staff will be sweeping the washroom and playground every morning. He adds in previous locations the campers have been in Saanich no evidence of drug paraphernalia over and above what would normally be found.
Campers have also been advised not to be on, or too near, playground structures intended for children.
