An 18-year-old in Saanich has stepped forward to run for a seat on council.
Reynolds graduate Ned Taylor said he has been passionate about politics for several years.
“I’ve grown up in Saanich, I love this community and I want to ensure our natural environment our beautiful neighbourhoods are going to be protected, not only my lifetime, but for future generations,” Taylor said. “I’m someone who’s a little bit worried about whether I’m going to be able to afford to live in the community I’ve grown up in. These are the issues that have inspired me to put my name forward.”
Taylor said while some people are hesitant about his age most are excited by his enthusiasm.
“Most people take one look at me and ask me how old I am, but so far it’s been very positive,” Taylor said. “I’ve very rarely had someone tell me no I’m too young and not ready and shouldn’t be running. Usually people are really excited to see a young person excited and passionate about politics.”
This is the second time Taylor has run for a seat on council -- having previously run in the 2017 byelection that saw Karen Harper elected.
“I learned a lot of things, I was a lot more nervous,” Taylor said. “Now I’m a bit more prepared in general it was all sort of a new very nerve wracking but also exciting experience. This being the second time I’m doing this I’m a bit more prepared.”
According to B.C. government requirements candidates must be 18 years old as of general voting day.
