After years of remediation work, Transport Canada is officially transferring property in Rock Bay to two local first nations.
The transfer of three parcels of land totaling just over 1.7 hectares is now in the possession of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations according to a release from Transport Canada.
Work to remediate entered its final stage in 2014 and has just been completed earlier this year.
“I am very pleased to see that after the successful remediation pf Rock Bay, this property is now transferred to the Nations,” said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau said in a media release.
Approximately 290,000 tonnes of contaminated sediments were removed from Rock Bay property in the last 12 years says Transport Canada.
With the transfer, the Esquimalt Nation and the Songhees Nation will have a significant presence in Victoria Harbour.
