Work crews have begun tearing up the grounds of the Victoria Courthouse to remove contaminated soil caused by the former homeless tent city.
Once the soil is gone, a public space featuring a children's playground will be created. A playground emerged as the most popular choice for the site following discussions with neighbours.
Testing of the soil determined the presence of contaminants, including lead, gasoline, diesel and trace amounts of methamphetamines following the dismantling of the homeless camp.
The remediation work is expected to wrap up in February.
