Island Health has identified two locations for safe drug consumption sites in Victoria.
The proposed locations are 941 Pandora Street and 2920 Bridge Street.
Safe injection is also being offered at Johnson Street community centre (the former Central Care Home) but only to residents.
Island Health Chief medical Health Officer Richard Stanwick says it’s a proven strategy to reduce the number of overdose deaths.
“Insight, which is the first supervised consumption site in B.C., has been in operation in 13 years and it has had three million injections and not a single overdose death,” Stanwick said speaking on C-FAX on Tuesday.
Stanwick added that save consumption is only a part of the health services offered at these locations.
In a release, Island health says the proposed locations are the result of months of work with the City of Victoria, Vic-PD and the YES2SCS group that has long asked for these sites.
