An announcement is coming later this week on safety improvements to Hwy 14/Sooke Rd. Premier John Horgan made that pledge during a news conference this afternoon.
Horgan is also the MLA for the Juan de Fuca area and says the area is the fastest growing part of Vancouver Island and transportation infrastructure has not kept pace with that under previous governments.
"The former government asked for a review of the corridor. That review came to me some months ago and it was inadequate. I asked the ministry to go back and look at it again, with a view ... and of course since then we've had another fatality on the highway 14 corridor. We're going to be making another announcement later in the week on some preliminary steps for safety improvements and there will be much more work done in that corridor."
Horgan says following the announcement there will be much work to do. There have been increasing calls lately from area mayors to add better lighting, to create safe pullout areas, to widen the highway where possible, and for more frequent and better line painting.
