Distracted driving continues to claim more lives on B.C. roads than impaired driving, and traffic enforcement personnel are having to find more creative ways to catch law breakers.
"We could be anywhere, behind a bush, on a bike, in a BC Transit bus, standing next to a flagger at a construction site."
Despite tougher penalties, more police enforcement and continued public education, drivers still aren't getting the message.
Last year, police in this province issued a total of 43-thousand distracted driving tickets. That generated 46 million dollars.
Acting Staff Sergeant Ron Cronk heads the CRD's Integrated Road Safety Unit.
"I think the level of engagement from the community and the police is huge and we probably didn't have that groundswell in the early days of alcohol driving. So, I think that's going to expedite getting to that point where distracted driving is no longer socially acceptable."
Police across the province are ramping up distracted driving enforcement in September, and community volunteers are conducting Cell Watch deployments to remind drivers to take a break from their phone when driving.
