Flurries were coming down over parts of Vancouver Island on Friday morning, with more expected through the day, but so far it's not enough to give school kids a snow day.
All the school districts on the south island have reported to CFAX that they're operating per usual. The Greater Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, and Cowichan Valley school districts will remain open.
Environment Canada says up to 10 centimetres of snowfall is expected. They say light snow will intensify this afternoon and areas away from the water and over higher terrain such as the Malahat, Shawnigan Lake and Cowichan Lake will see the highest accumulations of snow closer to that 10 centimetres estimate. Areas near the water such as downtown Victoria may see upwards of five centimetres of snow.
Meanwhile, winds are also expected to cause problems. Environment Canada warns that "strong outflow winds gusting to 90 km/h will develop this evening over the Fraser Valley, southeastern Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands. Any falling snow during the period of strong winds may result in reduced visibilities in blowing snow."
The strong winds are forecast to continue into Saturday.
