The NDP MP for Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke says the Federal government's newly announced plan to protect oceans and coastlines is too focused on clean up and compensation rather than prevention.
Randall Garrison says the $1.5-Billion spill response and ocean protection plan is lacking in 3 major areas: it lacks a promised tanker ban on the north coast, fails to designate marine protected areas, and fails to include a recovery strategy for southern island killer whales:
'"Where's the recovery plan for southern resident killer whales? This announcement, and I went through the government's announcement, says we're going to have another science-based study about what should be done about southern rewsident killer whales."
Garrison says the whales were designated as an endangered species well over a dozen years ago, and another study delays much needed action on population recovery.
Garrison was speaking on the Adam Stirling show on CFAX 1070.
