Two naval ships have returned to Vancouver Island after a 6 week deployment. HMCS Brandon and HMCS Edmonton returned this morning.
Lieutenant Commander Lucas Kenward, the Commanding Officer of HMCS Edmonton, says the ships were operating off the coast of Guatemala and Mexico.
Kenward says crews were part of a multinational campaign called "Operation Carribe" (Care-eeb) targeting the illicit drug trade by transnational organized crime:
"Both ships combined were able to intercept, disrupt, about 2800 kgs of cocaine while operating in the high seas in that area. So overall a very successful operation."
The Canadian Navy was working with members of the US Navy during the operation.
