Nanaimo RCMP say a man wanted for an alleged assault with a weapon and Break and Enter was arrested Saturday night thanks to persistent officers, and the dogged determination of a K9 officer.
The incident began at Deadwood Creek Campsite, near Nanaimo Lakes Road, when a group of people who own a cabin found a man and woman inside.
They called RCMP, then decided to walk the pair to the main gate to wait for police when the male suspect allegedly sprayed 2 of the cabin owners with pepper spray, and fled. The woman stayed, and was arrested when police arrived.
Constables Josh Grafton and Tanner Fowler, assisted by RCMP police dog "Jager", tracked the suspect for 2 hours through freezing temperatures, foot deep snow, and treacherous terrain, finally locating 39 year old David Banford. He was bitten several times during the arrest and was treated in hospital.
Given the remoteness of the area, additional officers and Nanaimo Search and Rescue were called in to assist. Constable Grafton described the track as one of his toughest to date.
Banford faces weapons and property related charges. His 29 year old female companion is charged with one count of Break and Enter.
