Nanaimo RCMP are searching for a man they believe has information tied to an ongoing murder investigation of Makayla Chang.
Chang was 16 in February 2017, when her body was found in Nanaimo.
RCMP's Serious Crime Unit Investigators are asking the public to keep an eye out for 59 year old Steven Michael Bacon, who knew Chang before her death. Bacon is not a suspect in the case, but investigators want to speak with him, as he may have information that could help the investigation move forward.
Constable Gary O'Brien says they spoke with Bacon when the investigation first began.
"He was located in Sudbury, Ontario, in April of 2017. Our investigators had a conversation with him, he wasn't arrested and he wasn't detained, he was free to go. And we believe he was heading to Montreal, we haven't been able to confirm that. So we're at that point in the investigation where we need to have another conversation with him, and we need the public's assistance. We haven't ruled out that he could be anywhere in Canada, be it Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, or elsewhere."
Bacon is a Caucasian man, standing 5'10" tall and weighing 200 lbs. He has grey hair and possibly grey facial hair. He has a distinct tear drop tattoo under his left eye, a Bugs Bunny tattoo on his upper right arm, and an unidentified tattoo on the back of his right hand.
Bacon may be using fake names, like Michael Dufour, Michael Vincent Defoure, Steven Michael/Mike Vincent, or Mike Jannis.
Anyone with information on Bacon's whereabouts is asked to contact local police, Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
