The Mustard Seed Food Bank is asking for people to consider spreading out their donations throughout the year.
Mustard Seed's Director of Development, Janine Boice, says they have to plan ahead, because they receive about 70 percent of their annual donations in December.
"What happens is, as we hit March, our shelves become bare and our donations drop drastically. So what we're asking is people to consider giving on a month-to month basis, not increasing what they give, just scheduling or planning on a month-to-month to give to the Mustard Seed Food Banks."
She says there are 50,000 individuals in the Capital Regional District who have struggle getting food everyday. But the Mustard Seed, along with their partners, are able to help out a majority of them. The Mustard Seed itself feeds 5,000 people a day, and the Food Rescue Distribution program is able to supply 35,000 people with fresh produce and dairy products. She adds that 59% of people who visited food banks in 2018 were on disability or social service, while the other 41% are working families struggling to make ends meet.
Boice is asking people to spread out their donations throughout the year, adding that a $47 donation will provide enough healthy, nutritious food to feed a family of four for an entire month.
She asks that people donate online, over the phone at 250-953-1581, email donors@mustardseed.ca, or in person at the Mustard Seed Market at 625 Queens Avenue.
