A wildfire that erupted on Mt. Manuel Quimper in the Saseenos area of Sooke is estimated at about 1.2 hectares, but does not appear to be spreading .
Sooke Fire Chief Kenn Mount says crews are shuttling water up to a staging area on the mountain, and are operating 3 pumps and portaable pools woith the support of the CRD. The BC Wildfire service is also staying in the area to help.
Mount says they also have a better idea how it started:
"From what I understand the wildfire service did find what looked to be, maybe in the area of origin was the remnants of some sort of litter. And perhaps there was a campfire or cigarette, that's unknown. But they did come across the remainders of what looked to be litter that was on the ground."
Mount says CRD parks officials are stationed at the end of Harbourview Rd. at the entrance to the park - which is a popular hiking area"
" So there's CRD Parks officers at the gate and they're only allowing emergency crews in and out of the recreational area at this stage.
The blaze is not threratening any structures.
